What is Strength and Conditioning (S&C)?
Strength and conditioning is the practical application of sports science, to enhance movement quality and performance. S&C is not general fitness, and it is not simply exercise for the sake of exercise.
Modern S&C is made up of two parts:
Strength – the quality or state of being physically strong
Conditioning - the process of training to become physically fit by a regimen of exercise, diet, and rest
What does a Strength and Conditioning Coach do?
Strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches help to improve your fitness for task via the implementation of a simplified practice absed on sport science principles, physiology and anatomy.
A S&C coach will focus on improving the qualities associated with your sport, including:
Speed
Skill
Strength
Stamina
Recovery
Injury reduction
Your S&C coach will develop training programs with your sport, current capability and requirements in mind.
What does a S&C session involve?
What these sessions involve will be determined by your sport or activity requirements.
For example, a javelin thrower has vastly different requirements to a marathon runner, and their supplementary training (training that isn’t their sport) should be altered to suit their task.
In a Strength and Conditioning session at Retrain Health, Ballina, your S+C coach will develop a program to suit your needs and then facilitate your training session, ensuring you are performing the correct techinques and successfully executing your program.
An example S&C program for a rugby league player may look like the following:
